The Structural Engineering section of the journal Current Chinese Science publishes original research articles, letters, reviews/mini-reviews and guest edited thematic issues on academic research and engineering practice in structural engineering. 

This section is not limited to a specific aspect of the field but is instead devoted to a wide range of sub fields in the field. Articles of a multidisciplinary nature are particularly welcome. Professor Yu-Fei Wu is currently a Distinguished Professor at the College of Civil and Transportation Engineering, Shenzhen University, China. He obtained his BSc in 1983 and MSc in 1986 from Zhejiang University, China. He received MEng from National University of Singapore in 1994 and completed his PhD in 2002 at the University of Adelaide, Australia. He has more than ten years of industry working experience in structural engineering as a professional engineer in consulting firms in China, Singapore and Australia and is a chartered professional engineer of New Zealand and Australia (FIEAust, CPEng, NER, MIPENZ). His research interests lie in the broad field of structural engineering. Professor Wu has published more than 250 technical works, including 150 SCI indexed journal papers. Professor Wu is the inventor of numerous new structural theories and technologies and has received prestigious research awards including the Moisseiff Medal from American Society of Civil Engineers and State Scientific and Technological Progress Award of China. Professor Wu is the sole or 1st named inventor of six US patented technologies and numerous new structural theories and technologies, such as (1) the theorems for flexural design of reinforced concrete, (2) the experimental method that can directly measure shear strength components in RC member tests, (3) the compression yielding structural design approach to increase the ductility of RC members and others.

吴宇飞,深圳大学土木与交通工程学院特聘教授,博导。1983年毕业于浙江大学土木工程学系、86年于同校获硕士学位,1994年获新加坡国立大学土木工程硕士学位,2002年获澳大利亚阿德莱德大学博士学位。吴教授在中国、新加坡、新西兰和澳大利亚从事职业结构工程设计、管理工作超过10年,为澳大利亚和新西兰注册结构工程师。1989-1992任教于上海交通大学,2004-2015为香港城市大学建筑及土木工程系副教授(终身教职),2015-2019为澳大利亚皇家墨尔本理工大学工程学院教授(Metro Chair)。主要教学和研究领域包括:钢筋混凝土结构、结构设计、复合结构、FRP结构、结构加固等。吴教授发表超过250篇学术论文,其中SCI论文近160篇,Google Scholar-H指数为46。吴教授发明了若干结构新技术并被授权美国发明专利,2018年被美国土木工程师学会ASCE授予Moisseiff 奖章,两次获中国国家科技进步二等奖。

His research interests focus on advanced metal structures, including bimetallic steel structures, high-performance and high-strength steel structures, and deconstructable steel structures. Associate Professor Ban serves as Invited Executive Council Member of China Steel Construction Society (CSCS), Secretary-General of the Sub-association of Structural Stability and Fatigue in CSCS, and member of ASCE.

Prof. Michael C. H. YAM is the Deputy Director and Secretary-General of the Chinese National Engineering Research Centre for Steel Construction (Hong Kong Branch). He is a Professor of the Department of Building and Real Estate at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His research focuses on focusing on experimental and numerical investigation of structural steel members and connections. His current research projects include high strength steel bolted connections, fatigue and fracture of high strength steel, the application of shape memory alloys in steel connections, and earthquake resilient structures. He has authored or co-authored a number of highly cited papers on FRP composites for civil engineering applications, and is a co-author of the written book “FRP- Strengthened RC Structures”. His main research interests lie in three distinct areas in structural engineering: a) Precast concrete structures, b) Prestressed concrete structures and c) FRP in civil engineering. Dr Jinlong Pan is a Professor at the School of Civil Engineering, Southeast University, China. He joined Southeast University in September 2006 as an Associate Professor and was promoted to Professor in 2012. He also holds two degrees, BEng in Civil & Structural Engineering and MEng (Res) in Structural Engineering awarded in 1999 and 2002, respectively, both by Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. Jinlong’s research covers a board range of fields in Construction materials and Structural Engineering, with focus on strain-hardening cementitious composites, geopolymer/alkali-activated cement, fibre reinforced polymer composites, 3D concrete printing, precast concrete structures and its seismic behaviour, steel-concrete composite structures, numerical modelling of fracture and structural behaviour of concrete and concrete structures etc.

Dr Jian-Ying Wu's research focuses on the theoretical and computational modelling of engineering materials and structures. As the PI, he has secured more than 3m CNY from NSFC and most since 2010, including the Early Career Award of NSFC (2012). He has published more than 80 journal papers and won the Award of National Science and Technology of China (2016). Currently, his research interests include the modelling of the instantaneous/time-dependent mechanical behaviour (strength, deformations, damage, fracture, creep, fatigue, etc.), durability (carbonation, freezing-thawing, erosion, penetration, etc.), hazard (fire, earthquake, impact and blast, etc.) resisting properties of engineering structures. In particular, he recently proposed a unified phase-field damage theory applying to both brittle and quasi-brittle solids and developed a phase-field regularized cohesive zone model which can be used to model the damage and failure of engineering materials and structures.

Dr Nicola Nisticò graduated in Engineering from the Sapienza University of Rome. He obtained his PhD at the University of Firenze in 1994: the thesis examined the validation of the Discrete Element Method for the seismic assessment of Block Masonry Structures, and the formulation and implementation of a constitutive model for a contact-impact problem. He was previously a Researcher at the National Group for Protection against Earthquakes (GNDT) where he focused on the seismic vulnerability evaluation of existing structures. Since 1997, he is an Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering at the Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering, the Sapienza University of Rome where he teaches as an Associate Professor on Structural Design and is a member of the PhD Board. His scientific activity addressed topics regarding a) expert systems b) numerical modelling b) seismic assessment and retrofitting of existing structures b) structural monitoring c) composite FRP materials.

Prof. Rongqiao Xu joined the Institute of Transportation Engineering, Zhejiang University as a lecturer after he got the bachelor, master and PhD degrees from the Zhejiang University from 1989 to 1999. From January 2003 to December 2004, he visited Nagaoka University of Technology and Science, Japan. He also visited the City University of Hong Kong from November 2005 to February 2006. He was PI for 3 projects and also participated 5 projects supported by NSFC. He published more than 60 SCI papers, which were cited more than 800 times. He is the director of the Institute of Transportation Engineering, a member of council for bridge and structure engineering branch of China Civil Engineering Society, a member of council for tunnel engineering branch of China Highway and Transportation Society. His research interests includes the analysis theories and methods of bridge and tunnel structures, the bridge information management and artificial intelligence, composite structures, smart materials and structures, FRP and so on.

Dr. Shilang Xu is a Chair Professor of Civil Engineering of Zhejiang University and the Chairman of Academic Committee of College of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Zhejiang University. Since 2010, he is the Director of Institute of Advanced Engineering Structures and Materials at Zhejiang University. From 2009 to 2014 he serviced as the Dean of the College of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Zhejiang University. He received his Ph.D. degree in Dalian University of Technology, China in 1988. He has conducted research over the past four decades on concrete fracture mechanics, high- performance cementitious composites, hybrid structures, hydraulic structures and dam safety analysis. He has authored/co-authored over 400 scientific papers, leading to over 7,400 non-selfcitations. He initially introduced the double-K fracture criterion and is the chairman of RILEM Technical Committee TDK: Testing methods for determination of double-K criterion for crack propagation in concrete, which was created by RILEM in September 2011. His work has been studied and cited by scholars from over 57 countries and regions. And the Chinese National Standard DL/T 5332-2005 is published to define the testing methods for the determination of double-K parameters. He won the second prize for National Natural Science Award of China in 2015 and the second prize for National Technical Invention Award of China in 2018. Current Interesting fields include the integrity evaluation and toughening techniques of quasi brittle composites; safety evaluation method of nonintegrated structures with in quasi brittle composites; nano improving and fiber recombination for cementious composites.

Dr Alper İlki is a Professor of Structural Engineering at Istanbul Technical University. The main theme of his academic studies is the seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete and masonry structures, as well as seismic design, assessment, and retrofitting. He is the author/co-author of more than 50 international journal papers and more than 160 international conference papers. Other than acting as a reviewer or guest editor for more than 40 international reputable scientific journals, he acts/acted as associate editor or editorial board member of ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction, Bulletin of New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering, International Journal of Civil Structural Health Monitoring, Arabian Journal of Science for Engineering and Technical Journal of Chamber of Civil Engineers, among few others. He also co-edited two international books published by Springer titled Seismic Risk Assessment and Retrofitting, and Seismic Evaluation and Rehabilitation of Structures.

Fei Kang is a professor in the Faculty of Infrastructure Engineering at Dalian University of Technology. His research interests are focused on dam safety monitoring and health diagnosis of hydraulic structures. He has supervised three projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and more than 10 other scientific research projects. He has published more than 60 scientific research papers. He was selected into a National Youth Talent Program, and was selected as a highly cited Chinese scholar. He won the first prize of Liaoning Province Natural Science Award and the Sloan Outstanding Paper Award.

Professor Feng Peng joined the department of civil engineering, Tsinghua University in 2005. He was awarded BE and PhD degrees from Tsinghua University, China in 2000 and 2005, respectively. Professor Feng’s research interests encompass the theory and technology of advanced materials and novel structures in civil engineering, composite materials and composite structures, neo-concrete structures and special structures, and 3D-printed structures. Professor Feng is council and executive committee member of the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC), and member of the Property of Concrete (AFF80) and Structural Fibre-Reinforced Polymers (AFN20) of the Transport Research Broad (TRB). He received his PhD from National University of Singapore in 2015. His research focuses on the Marine FRP/steel-concrete composite materials and structures, lightweight steel-concrete composite and prefabricated modular structures. Dr. Huang has been awarded the Guangdong Provincial Outstanding Youth. He has published over 60 academic papers in the field of Marine and Composite material and structures, including 42 SCI journals.
