中枢神经系统(CNS)是哺乳动物中胆固醇含量最高的器官。 胆固醇的稳态对正常的大脑功能至关重要,胆固醇代谢异常可能导致神经系统问题。 多发性硬化症(MS)和阿尔茨海默氏病(AD)是以胆固醇代谢异常为特征的神经系统疾病。 植物甾醇(PS)是植物来源的成分,在结构和功能上类似于胆固醇。 PS因其降低胆固醇的特性而闻名。 由于它们具有到达大脑的能力,研究人员已开始研究PS在中枢神经系统中的生理作用。 在这篇综述中,讨论了疾病和健康的中枢神经系统中PS的代谢和功能。
