Abstract
This review surveys the literature published on the emerging biological properties of furanodienone. Furanodienone (FDN) (1) is a furanosesquiterpenoid belonging to the class of furanogermacranes. This class of secondary metabolites is usually not widespread as they are present only in Asteraceae, Apiaceae, Myrtaceae, Lauraceae, Zingiberaceae and Burseraceae. It is commonly isolated from several species of Curcuma and Commiphora. This compound was shown to have several interesting activities, e.g. anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer activity. Several in vitro and in vivo studies showed that FDN is able to inhibit several proinflammatory enzymes, such as COX and LOX, it decreases NO generation and reduces the production of proinflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, it is able to inhibit cell proliferation in different cancer cell lines, through the induction of apoptosis. Tested against several microorganism, FDN showed an antibacterial activity against Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria, an antifungal activity against pathogenic and phytopathogenic fungi, and an antiprotozoal activity against Trypanosoma brucei.

Catalytic C-H bond activation as a tool for functionalization of heterocycles
The major topic is the functionalization of heterocycles through catalyzed C-H bond activation. The strategies based on C-H activation not only provide straightforward formation of C-C or C-X bonds but, more importantly, allow for the avoidance of pre-functionalization of one or two of the cross-coupling partners. The beneficial impact of ...read more
Chemistry and Biology of Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are one of the most abundant natural products and are considered to be extremely important biomolecules for their ever-increasing impact on chemistry and biology. Their role in several important biological processes, notably energy storage, transport, modulation of protein function, intercellular adhesion, malignant transformation, signal transduction, viral, and bacterial cell ...read more
Electrochemical C-X bond formation
Conventional methods for carrying out carbon–X bond formation are typically conducted at harsh reaction conditions, and rely on expensive catalysts as well as the use of stoichiometric, and perhaps toxic, oxidants. In this regard, electrochemical synthesis has recently been recognized as a sustainable and scalable strategy for the construction of ...read more
