Abstract: This commentary explores the reasons why sex and gender differences must be
included in medical education and the impact on healthcare outcomes for patients. Understanding
sex and gender differences could be useful in making more accurate diagnoses and
to develop more effective treatment plans. Sex and gender medicine take into consideration
both the genetic basis and the effects of exposure to environmental and socio-economic factors.
