Abstract
The effect of S-(1,2-dicarboxyethyl)glutathione(DCE-GS) on glutathione (GSH) synthesis, especially γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (γ-GCS), was studied in rat liver homogenate. It was found that the feedback inhibition of the γ-GCS by GSH was released by the addition of DCE-GS in the dose dependent manner. Namely, the activity of γ-GCS decreased to 17% of the normal level when GSH at the concentration of 10 mM was added to the reaction mixture. However, the addition of DCE-GS offset the inhibition at 20 μM and increased the γ-GCS activity to 1.7 and 3 times from the normal level at 50 and 100 μM, respectively .These results suggest that DCE-GS plays a role in stimulating the GSH synthesis.
