Prevalence of Triple Negative Breast Cancer and its Therapeutic Challenges

Abstract

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common among females. The current status of BC worldwide shows that more than 1 million women are affected and ~400 000 die every year. Partial success has been achieved by mammography coupled with adjuvant treatment. However, its incidence and mortality both are increasing. Several subcategories of BC have been reported; of which, one is triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). This is defined by a lack of expression of oestrogen and progesterone receptors and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2). Several approaches have been used for speedy and accurate diagnosis and precise treatment of BC. In this context, precision medicine approach is of great relevance in ameliorating the suffering of the patient’s from the menace of BC. The present chapter aims to provide background information, different types of BC and its sub-types and molecular mechanisms for therapeutic intervention required for precision medicine.
