and carried out his PhD at the National Hellenic Research Foundation (1987-1991). He was a recipient of
a post-doctoral fellowship (1992-1994) from AstraZeneca and worked at the University of Oxford,
Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics. He continued his post-doctoral training as a research officer at the
University of Bath. In 2000, he moved to Finland as Head of the Protein Crystallography Core Facility at
the Turku Centre for Biotechnology and he is currently Principal Investigator and Adjunct Professor in
Biochemistry and Structural Biology at the University of Turku. He has authored more than 90 scientific
papers.

Dr. Qadir has developed a new cost-effective and convenient method for diagnosis of
cancer named as “Qadir test”. Dr. Qadir has also invented two anti-HIV drugs that may
be used as prophylaxis or for the treatment of AIDS, especially for Pakistani’s patients.
Dr. Qadir has worked to evaluate the pharmacological activities of local plants. He has
established use of many local plants for cancer, jaundice/hepatitis, hypertension,
asthma, diabetes, spasm, ulcer, fever, diarrhea, and infectious diseases of bacterial and
fungal origin. Dr. Qadir has also worked on the isolation and structure elucidation of
bioactive substances from medicinal plants and has resulted in the discovery of several
new/novel natural compounds. Dr. Qadir has patents for Preparations containing
locally isolated bacteriophages (Qadirphages) with their antibacterial activity. Dr.
Qadir has increased the efficacy of many drugs with the use of nanotechnology and
polymer-technology. Dr. Qadir has identified different biological and pharmacological
pathways which are important for diagnosis and management of different diseases. Dr.
Qadir has more than 190 publications, making an impact factor more than 100, and
supervision of 02 PhD and 35 M Phil theses.

J.-J. Zhang received his Ph.D degree in microbiology in Chinese Academy of Sciences, China (2006), and has my postdoc training in Indiana University School of medicine, USA. His primary research area focused on the signaling mechanism as well as the pathogenesis of important bacterial causative agents. Specifically, my current project is studying 1) the regulatory mechanisms of sigma-54 (RpoN)-dependent gene expression in Borrelia and Leptospira, 2) the second messengers, c-di- GMP/AMP, signaling systems in Borrelia, 3) type III gene regulation mechanism in Yersinia. The aim is to explore diverse strategies of how microbes respond to the stress conditions and environmental changes, and elucidate and characterize the mechanisms of the bacterial infections.
