My principal research activities include research into membrane transport of folates, cancer
drug discovery and development, basic preclinical studies of chemotherapy drug mechanisms
and resistance, and translational studies of cancer with direct clinical application. I have been
working in the area of folate and antifolate membrane transport and one-carbon metabolism for
almost 15 years and have published extensively in these areas. In collaboration with Drs. L.
Matherly and A. Gangjee, we have been developing novel folate-based therapeutics for cancer
that selectively target folate receptors and/or proton-coupled folate transporter (both highly
expressed in tumors) without substrate activity for reduced folate carrier (the major tissue folate

W. Luo Southern University of Science and Technology Guangdong China Biography
Biography of W. Luo
Dr. Luo got medical training and Ph.D. program in Southern Medical University, and had been to University of California/Berkeley Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and University of Miami as visiting scholar. Our team investigates the molecular mechanisms mediating invasion and metastasis of tumors including head neck cancer-nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). In the past years, we demonstrated first that neoplastic spindle cells in NPC might have features of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cancer stem cells (CSCs). We identified the EMT-related genes by gene expression profiles and explored the related molecules and mechanisms of regulating EMT and CSCs in NPC. For the first time, we demonstrated that ALDH1, a functional marker for identifying cancer stem cells in human NPC. We have published in 36 papers including SCI papers and have been cited in Science, Nature Rew Genetics, etc over 1200 times.
