Michael R. Dashwood (Biography
Michael R. Dashwood

: Dr. Michael Dashwood PhD has over 40 years research experience, previously studying areas of the central nervous system involved in pain and cardiovascular control and currently in vascular biology. Initially, he was employed at the Medical Research Council’s National Institute for Medical Research in London involved in studies into the central sites of opioid induced nociception and cardiovascular actions. After obtaining an MSc in pharmacology and a PhD in Physiology at the Royal Free Hospital, London, Dr. Dashwood’s projects have focused on vascular receptors and their role in health and disease, mainly on the endothelium-derived factors endothelin and nitric oxide. Disease-induced changes in protein expression or receptor characteristics have been identified in studies using blood vessels obtained from patients undergoing cardiac transplantation or coronary artery bypass surgery. Apart from affecting vascular reactivity these changes are also associated with cell proliferation, atherosclerosis and surgically-induced trauma. More recently Dr. Dashwood has published a number of research articles and reviews on the potential beneficial role of perivascular adipose tissue. These studies have been performed as International collaborations with colleagues in countries including Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Brasil and the USA and have generated over 200 publications in peer reviewed journals, many reviews and book chapters. Dr. Dashwood is presently an honorary staff member in the Department of Surgery and Interventional Sciences at the Royal Free Hospital/ University College London Medical School.
