He graduated in Medicine cum laude at the University of Pisa in 1982, where he received the post-graduate Specialization in Endocrinology in 1985 and in Occupational Health in 1987. He received also the postgraduate Specialization in Oncology (at the University La Sapienza, Rome, Italy) in 1992.

Anjaneyulu Kowluru

Dr. Anjan Kowluru obtained his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology [Delhi, India]. He is Associate Dean and [tenured] Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Wayne State University [Detroit, USA]. Dr. Kowluru is studying roles of small G-proteins in islet function in health and diabetes. He published more than 160 peer-reviewed publications, reviews and book chapters and presented more than 275 presentations at local, regional, national and international meetings. His research is supported by NIH, VA, ADA and JDRF. He is serving on numerous national and international public advisory groups and membership on prestigious journal editorial boards. He received highly prestigious Charles H. Gershenson Distinguished Faculty Fellowship, Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award, and membership in the Wayne State University Academy of Scholars. He holds Adjunct Professor appointments in Curtin University [Perth, Australia] and the University of Pune [Pune, India].

Fernando Ovalle (Biography
Fernando Ovalle

Fernando Ovalle, MD, FACE, is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine. In addition to maintaining a large and busy clinical practice, he serves as the Director of the Multidisciplinary Comprehensive Diabetes Clinic, and Director of Diabetes and Glycemic Control Programs at UAB Hospital. Also, he is the Director of the Diabetes & Endocrine Clinical Research Unit, and the Program Director for the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at UAB.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE), and an active member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) where he has served in multiple national committees and is Past-President of the Southern States Chapter of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE).

Dr. Ovalle has published extensively in the area of diabetes, and in addition to serving as a member of the editorial board of multiple scientific journals in the field of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, he is currently the U.S. Editor-in-Chief for the journal Diabetes Therapy.

Dr. Rosa Corcoy graduated in Medicine in 1982 at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She is currently the Director of the Diabetes Unit at Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona and Aggregate Professor of the Department of Medicine of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

She is a clinical endocrinologist and her research has focused in endocrinological conditions & pregnancy and Type 1 diabetes mellitus. She is author or co-author or more than 100 articles and 40 book chapters. She has received several awards, among them the José Luis Rodriguez Miñón, Sociedad Española de Diabetes and the Jorgen Pedersen Award, Diabetic Pregnancy Study Group-EASD.

Dr. Aristidis Veves is the Director of the Rongxiang Xu, MD, Center for Regenerative Therapeutics and the Research Director of the Joslin-Beth Israel Deaconess Foot Center and of the Microcirculation Lab, and Rongxiang Xu, MD, Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Veves’ main academic interest is diabetes complications including cardiovascular disease, neuropathy and foot ulceration. Dr. Donald Poirier received his basic training in organic chemistry (PhD at Université Laval, 1980-1985) and subsequently specialized in medicinal chemistry and endocrinology (Post-doctorat at CHUL - Research Center, 1986-1990). Professor at Université Laval since 1991, he is especially interested in the development of inhibitors of steroidogenic enzymes (steroid sulfatase and 17β-HSDs types 1, 2, 3, 7 and 12) and antitumor agents for the treatment of different diseases (breast, prostate and leukemia cancers, endometriosis, osteoporosis and Alzheimer). He is also interested to additional aspects of organic chemistry (synthesis, solid-phase synthesis, new methodologies, NMR analysis, etc.) and medicinal chemistry (SAR and QSAR analysis, molecular modeling, biological assays, etc.). He has published 204 scientific publications and 9 patent applications.

Claudia Stefanutti received her Ph.D. in Experimental Medicine (Atherosclerosis) from University of Siena, Italy, in 1988. Her specialties are: Liver and Metabolic Diseases (1986) and Emergency Surgery (1994), both received from University ‘ Sapienza’ of Rome. She studied extracorporeal techniques at the Department of Hematology from 1987-1989. During her training in surgery she introduced for the first time, the autologous blood recovery from wound or surgical site. She is Head of Extracorporeal Therapeutic Techniques, Lipid Clinic and Atherosclerosis Prevention Centre, Department of Molecular Medicine and Department of Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine. She is Professor of Internal Medicine and Biotechnologies at the University ‘Sapienza’ of Rome. She is Full Member of the International Society of Cytokines (2010-2014) and European Board Trustee of the International Society for Apheresis (2011-2014). She leads the Italian Multicenter Study on LDL-apheresis Working Group (Coordinator) and the Multidisciplinary International Group for Hemapheresis Therapy and Metabolic Disturbances Contrast (MIGHTY MEDIC) (President). She published 243 papers (h-index: 17).

Dr. Carlos A. Aguilar Salinas is recognized for his contributions as a researcher, professor and clinician in the study of dyslipidemias and type 2 diabetes in Mexico. He is the founder of the Lipid Clinic and the current coordinator of the research committee at the the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Medicas y Nutricion (INCMNSZ), Mexico City. His research covers the identification of the main susceptibility genes for type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemias in Mexican mestizos and epidemiological studies that have served to describe the burden of the disease caused by these disorders. He has published 275 articles in indexed and has been tutored 20 PhD students. He coordinated the position paper against diabetes presented by the Mexican National Academy of Medicine. Dr Aguilar Salinas was President of the Mexican Society of Nutrition and Endocrinology. Currently, he is co-editor of the “Revista de la Asociación Latinomericana de Diabetes” and member of the editorial boards of several prestigious journals.
