His research interests include optical fiber sensing system, fiber Bragg grating device, fiber optics chemical sensors, photonics crystal fiber biosensor, digital signal processing, such as artificial neural network, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithm, and wavelet, smart structures, and fiber optics chemical and biomedical sensing areas. His accomplishment in these areas is demonstrated in his 200 international publications.

He was awarded as Newton International Fellow in 2014 by Royal Society of Chemistry and was back to work in Wuhan University of Technology by January 2017, as a member of Hubei Engineering Research Center of RF-Microwave Technology and Application and director of Innovation Lab of Interdisciplinary research. His research interest is preparation and application of nano composite materials, such as synthesis and structure control of advanced graphene materials, interface design of noble metal and application of these materials into new energy devices, sensors and areas of RF microwaves. He has published more than 40 papers in SCI journals including Nature Communication, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Advanced Materials with around 600 citing times.

He is currently a Professor of College of Electronic Sci. & Eng, Jilin University, and a Researcher of the State Key Laboratory of Integrated Optoelectronics, China. His current research interests include second-order nonlinear optical polymer materials, as well as active and passive polymer waveguide and PLC devices for optical interconnect and sensor applications. He has published more than 70 refereed papers, 14 issued patents. His significant contribution to polymer waveguide devices includes thermo-optic switches, electro-optic switches/modulators, waveguide sensors, mode-division (de)multiplexers, and graphene-integrated waveguide devices.
